MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Gov. Peter Shumlin says the Vermont emergency management division is tracking Hurricane Joaquin closely as drenching storms hit the East Coast.

Shumlin says it’s too soon to tell whether the storm will hit Vermont but he says he hopes the state, which was devastated by flooding from Tropical Storm Irene in 2011, will be spared.

Shumlin said Thursday that he’s hoping that “Vermont has paid its dues on storms and this one will go somewhere else.”

Governors up and down the East Coast are warning residents to prepare.
