BALTIMORE (AP) - A Baltimore schoolteacher who teaches sixth and eighth grade social studies has been named Teacher of the Year in Maryland.

Ryan Kaiser, who teaches at the Mount Washington School, was announced as the winner on Friday. Kaiser is a graduate of the University of Nebraska and also received a master’s degree in elementary administration from the university. He has been a teacher for 16 years, the last 10 in Baltimore.

Kaiser will receive cash awards, technology equipment, and a new car valued at more than $25,000. He will spend the next year as a speaker and adviser and will also participate in several national meeting and conferences. He’ll also get a chance to compete for the National Teacher of the Year award announced in April. Kaiser’s school will receive $10,000.
