MARION, Iowa (AP) - Farmer’s State Bank has donated $500,000 to help expand the YMCA in the eastern Iowa city of Marion.

Cedar Rapids television station KCRG reports (https://bit.ly/1MhZNx3 ) that bank CEO Gene Neighbor says the donation is intended it was to honor his 97-year-old father, who was instrumental in building Marion’s current YMCA.

The expanded facility will be located on an extended part of Tower Terrace Road near Linn-Mar High School and will feature a larger pool and fitness area, more gymnasiums, meeting space and a library.

The city of Marion has pledged $6.5 million dollars toward the project.

The city hopes to start construction in May and open the facility within 16 months.
