MERIDEN, Conn. (AP) - The Pennsylvania-based Boscov’s department store chain is opening a store at Westfield Meriden shopping center, staking its first claim in New England.

Boscov’s is mainly in Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania and has a small presence in New York.

The Republican-American reports (https://bit.ly/1R4pTau ) that the store’s model is to offer products from furniture to shoes at affordable prices for middle-income shoppers who receive personal attention.

Chief Executive Jim Boscov says expansion is methodical, with executives taking months to open a store rather than imposing a cookie-cutter approach opening 10 to 20 stores at a time.

The strategy is to promote itself as a small store with a focus on personal service in a larger retail space. The chain emphasizes links to the community with an area set aside for outside events.
