COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Epic flooding in South Carolina’s capital city is stopping an event aimed at bringing awareness to the issue of domestic violence.

Columbia’s annual Mayor’s Walk Against Domestic Violence was cancelled Saturday due to flooding.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

An annual report by the Violence Police Center last month again ranked South Carolina worst in the nation for deadly violence against women, with a rate of 2.32 women killed per 100,000 people in 2013.

That’s more than twice the national average and represents 57 known deaths, compared with 50 a year earlier.

South Carolina has been in the study’s top 10 states annually for the last 18 years.
