WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser is joining city residents for a 1.5 mile walk in the city’s Takoma neighborhood.

Bowser will join other city officials including the director of the Department of Parks and Recreation and the director of the Department of Health for Saturday’s walk. The walk is part of the city’s FitDC initiative, which encourages healthy and active lifestyle choices.

The mayor will also talk about the city’s One Billion Steps Challenge, a challenge to residents to join together to walk one billion steps. The challenge was announced in May and the city is tracking residents’ progress toward the one billion steps goal on the website www.fitdc.com. As of Friday, it said over 17 million steps had been recorded.
