SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a Long Island man has been arrested for driving drunk after he struck and killed a pedestrian.

The accident happened at 8:30 p.m. Friday in Smithtown.

Suffolk County police say 43-year-old Timothy Burke, of St., James, was driving north on Route 111 when he hit a pedestrian crossing the road.

The pedestrian, 51-year-old Kenneth Rich, of Smithtown, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Burke was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated. He was awaiting arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip.

No information was available on an attorney for Burke who could comment on the charges.
