PLAUCHEVILLE, La. (AP) - When your backyard garden produces a bumper crop of tomatoes, it could mean a couple things.

Experimenting with homemade salsa? Possibly.

Quitting your job to start a business selling said salsa? Well, maybe, if you’re the Deshotels or Bordelon family.

Jason Bordelon and Patrick Deshotels are childhood friends whose first salsa experiments started out like their many other kitchen ventures together. They were just cooking for fun and their families.

“I remember telling him (Jason) we need to do something with this (salsa),” Deshotels said.



Their wives, Brooke Deshotels and Stacey Bordelon, didn’t think much of the idea.

“I really thought we were joking at first,” Stacey Bordelon said.

She later became the first one to take the idea seriously enough to quit her job to start 2Sisters’ Salsa Company.

As of 2014, 2Sisters’ has supplied about 100 retailers and restaurants across Central and South Louisiana. And of this year, the Bordelon and Deshotels have a brand new facility on Highway 107 in Plaucheville, where they spent the better part of their summer stocking an also brand new warehouse.

That includes the Bordelon’s daughters Rayne Canoe, 15, and Shelie Canoe, 16, and the Deshotels girls Emily, 8, and Sarah, 11 - where “2Sisters” got its name from.

Brooke Deshotels came up with the name when the families started vending the salsa at local farmers markets. They printed the name on homemade labels and slapped them by hand on Mason jars.

Things have come a long way in only a couple years.

2Sisters’ officially branded salsa sold in about 100 locations last year as a “test run,” the families said.

Around last November, the families felt confident enough to expand from the kitchen of a local business they were borrowing - where they were still cutting veggies by hand and using a stove to prepare their salsa.

On Oct. 8, an official grand opening and ribbon cutting is scheduled for 2Sisters’ new facility.

2Sisters’ original Cajun salsa is the most popular. The company also offers a Jalapeño and fiesta salsa.

Patrick, who also still farms for a living, oversees the company. Jason is the salesman and spends most days on the road. Brooke does the book work and Stacey runs 2Sisters’ gift shop.

Stacey is credited as the creative one. She designs gift baskets, bags and boxes with 2Sisters’ salsa, seasoning and other items. With Christmas right around the corner, that area of business is booming, too.

“And they’re the worker bees,” Brooke Deshotels, joked referring to the girls.

The sisters have had their hands in the kitchen since beginning.

“We wanted to have something for our kids to possibly do,” Patrick Deshotels said of why they created 2Sisters’.

A trip to the Louisiana Hot Sauce Expo in Lafayette this summer really sold the four girls on the idea of the family business. They won three awards there for best salsa and branding, including the World Champion Award in the medium salsa category.

There could not have been four prouder girls.

“They put so much work in it they really want to see it through,” Stacey Bordelon said.

Before moving to their new facility, Bordelon said the girls spent their free time labeling the jars. Now, they have an automated sticker applicator, which everyone says is one of the biggest time savers. An assembly line with automated fillers, processors and pumps; pots four times the size of the 30 gallon ones used before and jar tighteners help, too.

The families, with some hired help, spent the summer stocking their new warehouse. They can now make 5,000 jars a day.

And to think, “nobody in this family ate much salsa before,” Stacey Bordelon said.

“We never really liked anything that was out there,” Patrick Deshotels added.

Problem solved.
