COLUMBIA, Md. (AP) - Authorities say a Columbia man was hospitalized after trench collapse that buried him up to chest.

Howard County fire and rescue officials responded to a home in the 6400 block of Barchink Place in Columbia about 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Rescue crews found the man trying to free himself after being buried up to his chest in dirt inside of a trench about 10 feet deep.

Crews used specialized equipment to stabilize the trench and were able to free the man about an hour after the call was placed. He was evaluated by paramedics and taken to Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for further evaluation in stable condition.
