MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say an inmate serving 99 years has escaped from the Red Eagle Work Center in Alabama.

The Alabama Department of Corrections told local news media that 57-year-old Charles Simmons escaped Saturday from the work center north of Montgomery. The ADOC says Simmons wasn’t at his institutional count at 9:35 p.m.

Simmons was sentenced in 1985 for theft of property first degree.

Simmons has been described as 5-foot-7, weighing 167 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
