PHOENIX (AP) - An 18-year-old man is being charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly drove at a Phoenix police officer while trying to escape.

Police spokesman James Holmes says Juan Velarde was also booked into jail Saturday on one count of felony flight.

According to Holmes, officers were called around 5 a.m. to an apartment complex about a possibly fight involving several people.

Upon arrival, officers say several people ran away while Velarde drove a passenger car.

Velarde allegedly drove at an officer, who injured his knee trying to evade the vehicle.

Police pursued the car and found it disabled.

Velarde was then found hiding in the area and taken into custody.

The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
