BEVERLY, Mass. (AP) - A 49-year-old Hamilton man was shot to death by Beverly police after they say he used his vehicle to ram several others, including two police cruisers.

Police say they responded to a report of a suicidal man on Balch Street Saturday afternoon.

Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett says the suspect, whose identity has not been released, had slammed his GMC Envoy twice into another SUV.

Blodgett says when an officer ordered him to stop, he rammed two police cruisers.

An officer fired a shot through the driver’s side window, hitting the man in the shoulder. He died later at a local hospital.

Authorities identified the man Sunday as Christopher Whitmarsh.

Police say he knew one of the passengers inside the vehicle he was ramming.
