COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - College Station police say two officers were struck while trying to take people into custody as a melee broke out at a carnival, resulting in the arrest of five teens.

Police say they and the management of the carnival set up in a parking lot decided to shut it down Saturday after a series of disturbances.

Police say off-duty officers had already broken up several situations Saturday night when they detained a juvenile for disorderly conduct. As she resisted an officer, she struck the officer in the jaw. The growing crowd threw cups with liquid on the officers and eventually grew to more than 1,000 people. On-duty officers and those from other agencies were called to help.

Another officer was struck in the throat while he was detaining someone else.
