PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza has created a task force to come up with ways to prevent students from losing academic skills over summer vacation.

The Summer Learning Task Force is charged with identifying educational opportunities for Providence students during the summer months.

Elorza says “summer learning loss” disproportionately affects low-income students and students of color in the public school system.

He says more than 60 percent of students in Providence lose reading skills while more than 50 percent lose math skills.

The chairwomen of the task force are Jennie Johnson, the executive director and vice president of City Year Providence, and Doris De Los Santos, executive director for development, partnerships and community at the Providence Public School District.
