MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s Middlebury College has inaugurated its 17th president, who is the first woman to lead the college.

Laurie Patton was formally inaugurated Sunday in an outdoor ceremony on the campus’s main quad.

Patton became president on July 1.

Before moving to Middlebury, she was the dean of Duke University’s Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and the Robert F. Durden Professor of Religion.

Patton is a graduate of Harvard University. She received a master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Chicago. She is the editor or author of nine scholarly books on South Asian history, culture and religion.

Sunday’s ceremony took place under clear skies, with many attendees cloaked against the cold in Middlebury College blankets.
