LITTLE COMPTON, R.I. (AP) - Two people who abandoned a burning sailboat off Rhode Island have been rescued.

The Coast Guard says it received a radio distress call at about 4 p.m. Monday from the two-person crew on the 24-foot sailboat from Ottawa, Canada. The message said the boat was on fire about one mile south of Sakonnet Point.

A motor lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Castle Hill arrived on the scene and found the two people in an 8-foot life raft.

No injuries were reported.

The state Department of Environmental Management and local fire department marine units put out the fire.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Andrew Stokes credited the crew of the sailboat for being well-prepared with a hand-held marine radio and a life raft.
