MILWAUKEE (AP) - State Sen. Chris Larson is challenging fellow Democrat Chris Abele as he runs for re-election as Milwaukee County executive.

Larson announced his candidacy on Monday. Abele, who has held the post since 2011, says he welcomes Larson into the race.

The election is April 5.

Larson is a former Milwaukee County supervisor and has been in the state Senate since 2011. He served one term as Democratic minority leader.

Larson says he is running to restore middle class values and chart a different course for Milwaukee County.

Abele says the county is in better condition now than when he took over and he is confident difficult issues in the community will continue to be addressed without raising taxes.
