ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - Police are investigating the death of an inmate at the Roanoke City Jail.

The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office tells media outlets that a deputy found Stephen Patrick Haga hanging by a bed sheet in his cell around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Deputies performed CPR and called the jail’s medical staff and 911. Haga was pronounced dead by Emergency Medical Services a short time later.

The sheriff’s office says investigators believe Haga’s death was a suicide. The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy and determine the cause of death.

Haga was serving a 14-year sentence on two counts of aggravated sexual battery of a victim under the age of 13. He was convicted on Sept. 10.
