VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - Ventura police say they have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with the weekend shooting of a former mayor of the city.

The Ventura County Star reports (https://bit.ly/1G9woIF ) 57-year-old Gregory Carson was shot Friday night when he interrupted a residential burglary in his home.

Carson was mayor in the 1990s and is currently a commissioner for the Ventura Port District. Police say he suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials said Monday that Oxnard resident Alejandro Valdez was arrested shortly after the burglary attempt. Police are searching for three other suspects, described as men in their 20s.

Valdez could face charges including residential burglary and attempted murder. Police say he wasn’t armed at the time of his arrest.

The newspaper says Valdez was held on $520,000 bail. It wasn’t immediately known if he has a lawyer.
