HERNDON, Va. (AP) - Authorities say a man has died after he set himself on fire.

Fairfax County authorities say the 50-year-old man died Monday after purchasing the gasoline, pouring it over himself and igniting it.

Authorities say the incident took place in front of a gas station in Herndon around 3 p.m. Fire officials say that people nearby tried to put the fire out, but were unsuccessful.

The county’s deputy fire chief Anthony Barrero Jr. says the man had second-and third-degree burns all over his body. Barrero says the man was flown to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released.

The incident remains under investigation.
