KEARNY, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey state police have released the name of a California man who was killed when the tanker truck he was driving overturned on the New Jersey Turnpike and caught fire.

Kumar Dalip was pronounced dead at the scene of the Oct. 7 crash, which occurred near milemarker 109.6 on the highway’s western spur in Kearny. His tanker was carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline from a Linden refinery.

The 40-year-old North Hollywood man lost control of the tanker when he tried to avoid some mattresses and box springs that had fallen fell off a van and onto the road. The truck overturned on the right shoulder and caught fire, sending billowing clouds of black smoke into the sky that could be seen as far away as New York City.

No charges have been filed in the crash, which remains under investigation.
