ELDRIDGE, Iowa (AP) - Two firefighters have been treated for smoke inhalation suffered while fighting farm field blazes in eastern Iowa’s Scott County.

The first fire was reported a little after 2 p.m. Monday, and another was spotted about 20 minutes later. Eldridge Fire Chief Tyler Schmidt says at least a dozen departments sent trucks and firefighters to put down the flames. He estimates that the two blazes blackened nearly 2,000 acres, destroying some corn that had yet to be harvested and menacing some buildings.

The flames were whipped by winds of up to 45 mph.
