PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A group of Brown University students are pushing to make its Columbus Day weekend a celebration of Native Americans.
WPRO-AM reports (https://bit.ly/1NaX1wC ) the students rallied Monday afternoon to call attention to the atrocities suffered by Native Americans throughout history.
The students also called on the university to change the name of its weekend from “Fall Weekend” to Indigenous Peoples Day.
Students successfully petitioned the school to drop Columbus Day from the school calendar in 2009, saying its offensive to Native Americans.
The campus’ Native American student group intends to meet with the university administration to discuss the name change.
