BURBANK, Calif. (AP) - A Southern California couple has been charged with child abuse after authorities say a live hand grenade and illegal drugs were found in their home.

Peter Jacquin and Deborah Charves of Burbank pleaded not guilty Tuesday to child abuse, possessing heroin and methamphetamine for sale and possessing a destructive device.

City News Service says the couple’s home was searched last week after investigators saw a suspected drug transaction take place in a parking lot.

Police say they found drugs in full view of the couple’s 10-year-old son. The hand grenade was found in a dresser.

The boy was taken into protective custody.

Jacquin could face nearly 10 ½ years in prison if convicted. Charves could face up to eight years and four months.
