SMETHPORT, Pa. (AP) - A northwestern Pennsylvania district attorney is resigning.

McKean County District Attorney Raymond Learn told The Bradford Era (https://bit.ly/1VQzZ01 ) on Monday that he took a job in the private sector. He says his term was ending shortly and an opportunity presented itself.

Learn, a Republican, was defeated in the May primary election by challenger Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer. He has held the position since 2010 and has been a prosecutor in McKean County for more than seven years.

His resignation will become effective Nov. 1
