LOS GATOS, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a hiker found a human skull in a rural area south of San Francisco.

KNTV reports (https://bit.ly/1PqONCM ) Tuesday that the skull was found in the area of Montevina Road and Sherrys Way in Los Gatos Monday morning,

Santa Clara County sheriff’s Sgt. James Jensen says deputies confirmed it is a human skull.

Detectives, crime scene investigators and search and rescue crews with cadaver dogs searched the area until late Monday.

No other remains were found.

Investigators are not ruling out the possibility that the skull could be a part of a Native American burial site. Those types of remains have been discovered throughout the Santa Cruz mountains in the past.

It remains unclear how the skull got there, how long it had been there or if the coroner will be able to identify the victim.
