RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont man has pleaded not guilty to child abuse charges after a day care center contacted the Department for Children and Families when staff members noticed unusual bruises on a 2-year-old in his care.

The Rutland Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1VPr9oG ) James Cornell of Rutland pleaded not guilty to aggravated domestic assault and cruelty to a child under 10 in court on Monday.

Rutland City Police say employees at the Learning Blocks Children’s Center on April 6 reported the case after noticing marks on the toddler’s neck.

Experts later found that Cornell’s explanation of the injuries was not likely. The injuries instead pointed toward physical abuse.

Cornell was released and is expected back in court on Nov. 9.
