POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) - The speaker of the New York state Assembly is making stops in Dutchess and Columbia counties as he continues his tour of the state.

Bronx Democrat Carl Heastie on Tuesday is scheduled to visit the Hudson Opera House, tour the Walkway over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie and stop by an agency serving the developmentally disabled in Amenia.

It’s all part of an extended state tour Heastie began last summer that has taken him to Buffalo, Fort Drum, Ithaca, Long Island and many other communities.

Heastie was elected speaker last winter and has said his travels are intended to help him better understand the challenges and opportunities facing the entire state and to counter the perception that state leaders are too focused on New York City.
