LAWTON, Okla. (AP) - A man accused of waving a handgun at passing motorists in Lawton has been fatally shot by a police officer.

According to Lawton Police Chief James Smith, officers responded to multiple calls of a man pointing a firearm at motorists just before 5 p.m. Monday. Police say that after a “brief encounter,” the man was shot.

He was taken to a hospital, where he later died. According to Lawton police Capt. Craig Akard, the man’s identity has not been released pending notification of his family.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation will investigate the incident.
