NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Newport News religious leaders have scheduled a forum on community violence in response to a fatal shooting by a police officer.

The Daily Press reports (https://bit.ly/1K4Xv2J ) that the forum is set for Oct. 28 at Heritage High School. Organizers say the goals include improving dialogue and trust between police and the community.

The event was prompted by the July 4 shooting death of Kawanza J. Beaty. The 23-year-old Beaty was shot during a police chase after an officer received a tip that a man was carrying a sawed-off shotgun. A shotgun recovered at the scene was found to be unloaded.

Police and the local prosecutor are still investigating. Last month, Beaty’s family filed a $10 million wrongful death lawsuit against police and the city.
