PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training has ordered a flooring company to pay $331,000 in back wages, civil penalties and interest.

The department says Mancieri Flooring Co. LLC underpaid wages on flooring removal and installation work as a subcontractor at the University of Rhode Island, falsified payroll records and tax forms and wrongly misclassified employees as independent contractors.

The East Providence company won’t be allowed to work on any prevailing wage jobs in Rhode Island for three years.

A message left for Kevin Mancieri at the company’s listed number wasn’t immediately returned.

The governor’s office says it’s increasing efforts to enforce state labor laws.

The office said last month that Pawtucket-based Cardoso Construction LLC will pay more than $730,000 in back wages, interest and penalties for mischaracterizing workers.
