COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Authorities they’ve arrested a suspect in the death of a 76-year-old Richland County woman found dead after an apparent robbery.

Sheriff Leon Lott says 42-year-old James Heyward was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with murder, burglary and kidnapping.

Deputies say they got a call to go to a home at around 5:30 p.m. Sunday and found a woman’s body. Coroner Gary Watts says 76-year-old Alice Tollison died from traumatic injuries to her upper body.

Lt. Curtis Wilson says the woman’s 8-year-old granddaughter was tied up during the robbery but was able to free herself to call 911.

Officers say there were signs of a struggle in the home. The girl was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Heyward was jailed, and it wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney.
