A police chief says officers shot and killed a man in an exchange of gunfire after they pumped tear gas into his apartment during a standoff.

Brookhaven Police Chief Bobby Bell tells The Associated Press that 31-year-old Rudolph Smith died late Monday after the hours-long standoff. Bell says Smith shot through his door at an officer who responded to a call that Smith was threatening other tenants at the Brookhaven Apartments.

Bell says officers and Smith’s family members tried to communicate with him during the standoff. Reporters heard gunfire for hours at the scene.

Brookhaven police Officer Kenneth Collins was lightly wounded when debris from gunfire hit him, but Bell says he continued work after being bandaged.

Bell says two long guns and two handguns were found in Smith’s apartment.

Mississippi authorities say a man resisting eviction died after he barricaded himself in his apartment and fired shots at police.

Warren Strain, spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, says the standoff in Brookhaven began after 6 p.m. Monday and ended just before midnight. He said it began because the man was resisting eviction.

Authorities have not said if the man was shot by police or killed himself. He wasn’t immediately identified.

Strain says Brookhaven police asked the Mississippi Highway Patrol to send its SWAT team to the apartments.

Strain said one officer suffered not life-threatening injuries. It was unclear whether the officer was wounded by gunfire or hit by shrapnel.

State police are investigating.

Brookhaven, a community of about 12,000, is some 50 miles south of Jackson.
