HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - Tim Howard is back in goal for the United States for the first time since last year’s World Cup.

Howard is in the starting lineup Tuesday night for an exhibition against Costa Rica, the last game for the Americans before the start of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

Howard took a one-year sabbatical from the national team after making 15 saves in the 2-1 round-of-16 loss to Belgium. When Howard returned last month, U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said he would be his No. 2 behind Brad Guzan.

Klinsmann kept only three starters from Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Mexico in the playoff for a 2017 Confederations Cup berth: central defender Geoff Cameron, midfielder Jermaine Jones and forward Jozy Altidore.

Brad Evans was at right back, Michael Orozco alongside Cameron and Tim Ream at left back. The midfield included DeAndre Yedlin, Danny Williams and Brek Shea, and Gyasi Zardes was the second forward in the 4-4-2 formation.
