LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Dona Ana County sheriff’s officials are seeking a man who stole the SUV of an 82-year-old woman who had previously agreed to go to the Sheriff’s Department with him to report a burglary of her home.

Officials said the incident Monday began when the woman was mowing her lawn and saw the man leaving her Las Cruces-area home.

He told her he’d scared off a burglar, and they left in her SUV with her at wheel. When they made a stop, the man forced her into the passenger seat and he took over driving.

The woman got away when they stopped at a convenience store for something to drink. A suspicious clerk called police though the suspect claimed the woman was grandmother.

The suspect then drove off in the SUV.
