CATO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - The condition of a Montcalm County sheriff’s deputy who was shot with a crossbow last week is improving at a hospital.

Susan Verplanck Kotenko tells The Grand Rapids Press (https://bit.ly/1GcSgTz ) Tuesday night that her son, Michael Kotenko, has a long road ahead in his recovery. She says they’re “so grateful for all the love and support that we’ve gotten.”

Authorities were serving an arrest warrant Friday night on 40-year-old Travis Lee Quay at his Cato Township home when the deputy was struck in the side with an arrow. A state trooper returned fire, striking Quay at least once. Quay was pronounced dead at the scene about 50 miles northeast of Grand Rapids.

Neighbor Kevin Schultz has said there was a confrontation between Quay and Schultz’s family Friday morning.
