PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona corrections officer who risked his own safety to rescue another officer from an attack by prisoners has been honored for his actions.

Sgt. Joel Reza came to the aid of an officer who had been knocked unconscious by inmates at a dining hall in the state prison in Florence on April 9. The Department of Corrections says Officer Daryl Boisvert was on the ground when Reza placed himself between Boisvert and attacking prisoners to protect the other officer.

Reza was injured as inmates continued to attack but protected Boisvert from further injury.

Reza was awarded the outstanding law enforcement officer’s valor award last week by the Phoenix chapter of ASIS International. The group is an organization for security professionals.
