GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - A Southeast Texas police chief who was suspended over an employment-related issue and later retired was not told details of the complaint.

Galveston police Chief Henry Porretto remains on paid leaving pending his retirement Oct. 30.

The Galveston County Daily News (https://bit.ly/1QrII7s ) reported Wednesday that the city suspended Porretto on Sept. 17 without informing him who complained or why.

The newspaper submitted an open records request seeking the written complaint.

City Manager Brian Maxwell said Tuesday that the complaint was done verbally, with no written record. Maxwell says he suspended Porretto without the chief being told anything about the complaint, other than it was a civil rights investigation.

The investigation by a law firm review was dropped after Porretto, who’d been chief since 2011, announced Sept. 23 that he was retiring.
