HARRISBURG, N.C. (AP) - An internal investigation is underway after authorities say a 5-year-old girl found a gun that had been left in a public restroom by a North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation agent.

Multiple media outlets report that the girl emerged from a Harrisburg restaurant’s restroom on Saturday night and she told her mother that there was a gun inside the stall. Restaurant staff retrieved the gun and called authorities.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office says that a female agent had already returned to the restaurant to get her firearm by the time deputies arrived on the scene a few minutes later. Authorities believe the unidentified agent got to her vehicle, noticed the missing firearm and came back inside.

The agency says it is conducting an internal investigation into the matter.
