MONETA, Va. (AP) - A preliminary report says a small plane was on an aerial photographic flight before it crashed in Moneta during a landing.

The National Transportation Safety Board’s report says the Cessna 177 was maneuvering for a landing at Smith Mountain Lake Airport when it crashed and caught fire on Sept. 13. The pilot and a passenger were injured.

According to the report, a witness told investigators that the engine was “missing and backfiring” before the plane crashed.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Terry Williams tells The News & Advance (https://bit.ly/1LkddJh ) that the investigation is continuing. Williams says a final investigative report likely won’t be available for a year.
