MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s moose hunting season is underway.

The rifle season opened Saturday and runs through Thursday.

This year, 225 permits were issued for the regular season- a 21-percent decrease from last year. An additional 40 permits were designated for a separate archery season.

Biologists say they reduced the number of moose permits because the densities of moose populations are below management goals in some areas.

The Fish and Wildlife Department estimates Vermont has about 2,400 moose with the greatest concentration in the Northeast Kingdom.
