CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The new $142 million Gaillard Center in Charleston is officially open.

Local media outlets report that about 1,800 people turned out on Sunday night for a grand-opening concert by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra featuring an appearance by renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

The new Gaillard Center is the most expensive municipal project in Charleston’s 350-year history and replaces the old Galliard Municipal Auditorium as a venue for concerts and other performances.

It will also be used for events staged by the Spoleto Festival USA.
