CANYON CITY, Ore. (AP) - A Grant County man fatally shot a wolf while hunting coyotes south of Prairie City.

Oregon State Police Lt. Bill Fugate said Monday that the man reported the killing to the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife on Oct. 6. Police met with the hunter and recovered the wolf from private property.

Wolves are protected by the state Endangered Species Act, and the Grant County district attorney will decide whether to file any charges.

The male wolf was originally from the Umatilla River pack in northeast Oregon.
