ETTRICK, Va. (AP) - The interim president at Virginia State University has withdrawn as a candidate for consideration by a search committee.

The Times-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1NQwLe6) reports that Pamela V. Hammond also says she will not stay on at the Ettrick campus past Dec. 31.

Hammond was hired after President Keith Miller resigned late last year amid financial challenges and declining enrollment. She had previously been provost at Hampton University.

VSU Rector Harry Black said Monday the search committee is moving forward on finding a permanent replacement. He said the committee hopes to be ready to ask the board in November to enter into negotiations with the finalist.

Black said Hammond had “a significant impact” during her stint as interim president.
