PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Investigators are trying to find out how two large commercial schooners at the Maine State Pier became adrift in Portland Harbor.

The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1WBvg4O ) the Coast Guard received a call at 4:30 a.m. Thursday from a worker on the waterfront who reported that the 88-foot Wendameen was adrift and pinned against a work barge at the pier.

When the Coast Guard arrived, it realized the 74-foot Frances also wasn’t at its usual dock. Lt. Scott McCann, of Coast Guard Station South Portland, says it was discovered against a sport fishing boat at Sunset Marina on the other side of the pier.

Both sailboats appear to have sustained only cosmetic damage.

Investigators are looking at security footage to determine whether the vessels were intentionally set adrift.
