NEW YORK (AP) - A Brooklyn man has been sentenced to 75 years to life in prison for raping and torturing a former girlfriend he held captive for three days.

Prosecutors say 31-year-old Alex Anselmo, of Clinton Hill, was sentenced on Thursday. He was convicted last month on charges of kidnapping, rape and assault. They say he pushed his way into the victim’s Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment on April 1, 2013 and handcuffed her to a bed where she remained for three days.

Prosecutors say Anselmo repeatedly raped and sodomized her, cut her feet with a knife, beat her with a dumbbell and shaved off her hair while her 2-year-old daughter was in the next room.

His lawyer had pleaded for a lighter sentence, saying that the victim seemed to be doing fine.
