BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) - A Dennis man has been sent to jail for 18 months after he was convicted of drunken driving in a car crash in Yarmouth that killed his passenger.

The Cape Cod Times reports that James Rebello III was also sentenced to five years of probation after pleading guilty Thursday to motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of liquor in connection with the crash last December that killed 28-year-old Steven Berrio of Harwich.

Police say Rebello, driving Berrio’s car, was speeding when he struck a traffic island, a boulder and a tree.

Berrio was ejected from the passenger seat through the windshield and died of his injuries.

Rebello was also seriously injured.
