AKRON, Ohio (AP) - A juror has been removed from the trial of an Ohio man charged with fatally shooting an off-duty Akron policeman at a bar in a potential death penalty case.

Summit County Judge Alison McCarty dismissed the juror Thursday, saying he violated her order not to have contact with anyone involved in the trial. McCarty said the man had contact in a parking deck with a woman who’d attended the trial and he flirtatiously asked about a friend of hers.

The Akron Beacon Journal (https://bit.ly/1FLer3p ) reports a defense attorney unsuccessfully objected, noting that the man was one of only two black members on the jury. Defendant Kenan Ivery also is black.

An alternate juror stepped in.

Ivery is accused of killing 32-year-old Justin Winebrenner last November. He has pleaded not guilty.
