DOSWELL, Va. (AP) - Extreme weather forced the early closure of the State Fair of Virginia, but not before the biggest pumpkin was crowned.

The winning gourd tipped the scales at 1,340-plus pounds. That shattered the previous State Fair record for a pumpkin - 1,203 pounds.

The new record was set by the grower who held the previous record, set only last year. Hank Houston is from Spotsylvania County.

For the record, the winning watermelon weighed in at 161 pounds, plus a few ounces. The grower was David Wells of Hanover County.
