BELLMAWR, N.J. (AP) - Workers are weighing and stuffing cannabis in bags as part of the final preparations before southern New Jersey’s newest medical marijuana dispensary opens its doors Monday.

More than 100 patients have selected Compassionate Sciences Alternative Treatment Center ahead of the Bellmawr facility’s opening next week.

The dispensary is prepared to serve 1,800 patients purchasing an ounce, general manager Michael Nelson said. Eventually, patients will be able to choose from two dozen medical marijuana strains.

The dispensary’s manager, Gretchen McCarthy, said patients have told her they plan to transfer from one of the three other dispensaries that are now open in the state. Nearly 5,300 patients have registered with the state’s marijuana program.

An ounce of dry cannabis buds will cost $480 at the facility - $40 less than the price charged by Compassionate Care Foundation in Egg Harbor Township, which is the only other dispensary in southern New Jersey.

“We looked at market prices, what others are charging, and wanted it to be more affordable,” Nelson said.

Nelson said they have an application pending to produce two topical marijuana products and a cannabis lozenge. If approved, those would be the first non-smokable products available in the state.
